  • Interview with External Audio Workflow

Posted by Cody Walters on November 24, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I have a very basic question regarding syncing and work flow. I shot an interview on a Canon 60D and recorded audio separately on an external audio recorder. Coming from FCP7 and Premiere, I would start by syncing all clips to the external audio. I would duplicate that timeline and create a “working sequence” were I am cutting out the bad takes and assembling my edit.

I understand that FCP X is big with keywords and tagging. I also read that some people prefer to tag the video first with what you will use in the final edit, using the internal mic and not the higher quality audio. And then after the sequence is assembled they sync the good audio to the interview.

Is this the preferred way to edit interview footage in X. And how do I go about syncing my good audio at the end of the edit?

    Thanks,

Can’t really help with the question other than to say I’d have though syncing post edit would be a not very efficient way to go. I’d do what you were doing in FCP7 but do it the FCPX way.

Start with FCPX syncing the audio for you, tag and keyword the synced clip, the edit it. Or just edit the synced clip into a project if the project is short enough. Metadata is great but often if it’s just a simple interview I can finish the edit in the time it would take me to go through and mark ranges.

Cody – in case you didn’t know this part, to sync external audio to a video clip, highlight both of them in your Event and then go to Clip/Synchronize Clips in the FCPX menu.

That will create the new synced clip that you can use for edits.

Thanks for the response. Those links did help. I finished the project with X and really enjoyed it. I will have to get use to the interview cutting workflow in X, but when it came to b-roll it was a joy to work with.

One thing I couldn’t get down is keywording multiclips. When I would tag a specific part in the timeline, in the event area I would show the entire clip instead of the small section I selected.
