Transitions
Posted by James Ewart on November 16, 2012 at 7:25 amOne of the things that most put me off FCPX when I first had a look at it was the array of cheesy transitions. It immediately looked and looks like a toy. Why would they incorporate that into a professional package…mystifying to me still.

November 16, 2012 at 5:31 pmIt’s funny because pretty much every NLE out there has their share of cheesy transitions. I honestly don’t know who uses them.
Although I’ve used the page wipe transition ironically before…

November 16, 2012 at 5:33 pmYeah… ????
I’m sorry, should we go back to pushes that aren’t field rendered, have ease in/out, and no motion blur?
FCP X is pretty much the most professional set of transitions and FX I’ve seen. Go check out Premiere. Yikes.
Would you rather build standard stuff like bleach bypass from scratch? Blur dissolves, light fx, zoom fx, all very nice and pretty standard stuff in use all the time.
Yes, the templates are pretty visible, but a good portion of them were the same master templates from FCP 7. Or did you not know about those? They also were in motion.

November 16, 2012 at 6:48 pmI think there’s a good stock of professional transitions in there.
The only think missing is the Kiki wipe.
Seriously Apple, how could you call any version of FCP “professional” without the Kiki wipe. -

November 16, 2012 at 6:50 pmHi Brett
yes I knew they were there in 7 but they were easier to turn a blind eye to. In X they are somewhat “in yer face”. They are showing off a bit aren’t they screaming “look at me aren’t I clever” and clever they may be but too clever for me!

Hey that’s $250/hr for that 2 channel Ampex ADO. The price dropped a bit by the time the Abekas A52 had it though.
You knew you were “pro” when you built your own cube transition.

November 16, 2012 at 7:14 pmYou’re talking about the templates, then. But as for transitions, except a few, they’re pretty much the same old pushes, wipes, zooms, radial, etc. with the addition of some nice blurs and light fx ones. And of course the ones related to the templates.
But what I’m really saying is the quality of the transitions is much more professional. Most ease in/out and have built in motion blur. They’re field rendered. Many of the legacy transitions were just, crap. Pushes and wipes were often not field rendered and they never had motion blur. I use puses/slides all the time for graphic builds and to now have motion blur and easing makes basic bullet points look more like they were done in after effects.
That said, a list view would be a pretty good request! But I do love scrubbing across the fx and transitions and having them show on the client monitor. Just like changing fonts.
