10.06 perform better now in heavy compositing using ProRes4444 and Tifs?
Does 10.06 provide better performance with tiffs and ProRes4444? I mean in heavy compositing for longer seqs…20-30min.
Previously when working with multiple layers of 4444 with alpha I would experience performance issues. Workaround was to convert to separate matte and fill as ProRes422, create compound clip, and use Stencil Luma for the key. It was OK but not my favorite process….major increase in media, compound clip issues, needed to tweak matte exposure for best results, etc.
Also I found jpgs to be less taxing than tiffs…actually was recommended to convert to jpg in Larry Jordan earlier tutorials.
Anyone know for sure if any of this has changed with 10.06?

I suspect that depends on your system, more than the FCP X update. What are your specs?
I have a Mac Pro 5,1 8 core with SAS RAID-0 Array of 6 2TB, 7200RPM drives (~800MB/sec), 16GB RAM, and a Quadro FX 4800 1.75GB and I’m seeing very few to no slow downs in tests with 4444 footage. While my tests are only 10 minutes or so, I can scrub chroma composites with no glitching and tests with that configuration compared to 442 converted footage seems to be very similar in performance.
The same footage on my older MP 4,1 with 8GB and the ATI graphics card are unbearable with the same version of FCP X.

2×2.4GHz Quad-Core
ATI Radeon HD 5770
16 GB Ram
Media on External Gtech 4TB eSata 7200…215MB/s-read/250MB/s-writeI have a 12-core with SAS storage but it is not avail right now…just curious what others have experienced.
I guess I really need a faster setup to really see any difference…waiting for the Dec iMac 27″.

I suspect that your disk performance is the main bottleneck on that system. By moving off of that disk configuration to something faster (215MB/sec is pretty slow for handling 4444), you’ll see a big improvement even on that system. To see what I’m talking about, grab the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test from the App Store and run it on that volume. I believe you’ll be surprised at how limiting that disk configuration is.

Yep I have the BM Disk Speed Ap….but had the read/write backwards..215write/250read. But yeah that is limiting.

1000 MB/sec is impressive. I downloaded Disk Speed Test and now I am depressed. My fastest external is a Firewire 800 that clocks in at write 66 MB/s and read at 43 MB/s. Anyway Disk Speed Test is a great App.
