Is there a way to transcode to proxy media in the project?
After cutting with some multi-clip, I’m beach balling like a mofo even after splitting the event into different projects of no longer than 10 min each. Is there a way target media in the project (timeline) and transcode to proxy? I can’t even view it at this point. I’m on the latest version of X with 2011 iMac 27 3.4 i7

First, there’s a preference to make optimized media for multiclips.
Second, you’d have to create these transcodes in the Event.
Click the Event and from the file menu choose Transcode Media, then choose proxy media.
Next go to preferences and choose to use proxy media in the Editing section.

I have the preference set to use proxies for Multi-cam, however I didn’t have enough space on the drive to make proxies + optimized media for every clip. What I wanted to do is gather only the media used in the project and create proxies for those, rather than every clip in the event. Is there a way to isolate clips associated with the project?

No, not without making yet another copy.
Tell me your system specs. Maybe there’s another way to troubleshoot the mofo-ing beach ball.

Late 2011 3.4 Imac i7 with 8 gig ram, which is probably my problem there. I’ve read that X is very ram hungry. For the next project, should I uncheck “optimized media” and go with proxy media?

What kind of storage do you have?
What is the source material of your footage? Where it is stored? Have you created optimized media? Did you import the original media as well or is it aliased?

I edit 3 camera native 1080p30 h264 (canon 7D) multicam on the same machine all the time. No beach balls. I have to turn off report dropped frames, but it all works great. If I flip it to better performance it’s even better, but I can’t stand looking at blurry pictures that better performance produces. I rather see a stutter step here or there.
The only difference I guess is I have 16gigs of ram. But I look and FCP X is rarely using more than 6 or 7. I’m also using a Pegasus thunderbolt raid. If you’re editing off a FW800 or less then that’s probably the holdup.

They need to add a “find used” function in search somehow. Might not be possible since the media in the event actually has no idea if it has been used in any sequence anywhere from what I can tell.
You can do what you want. It’s just on a clip by clip basis. You can do one of two things. Find each clip manually by match framing from the timeline (shift+f) and putting them in a “used” keyword collection. Or if you know which clips, selct them all in the event by hand.
Either way, after selecting the used clips, select them all and right click and choose transcode media and choose proxy. Then switch to proxy playback in prefs. Notice, all your footage that isn’t proxy now goes off line til you switch back to optimized original. But it’s pretty seamless. You won’t lose your renders or anything.

Match framing one by one is exactly what I was trying not to do. I am indeed using a firewire drive. I just deleted all the optimized media from the finder and transcoded everything to proxy overnight.
