Color grading and media location gotcha
Here’s an FCP X gotcha.
Scenario: The actual media files live in the “Original Media” subfolder of an Event folder inside the FC Events folder.
Result: Playback is greatly hampered if you send it to Color or Resolve.I sent XMLs from FCP X to Resolve and Color (via Xto7). Resolve played the files at about 1/2 of real time. Color wouldn’t play them at all. I was able to scrub through them. If I moved the files out of the FC Events folder to another folder on the same drive – or to another drive entirely – performance was real-time in either application. The same issue doesn’t appear to happen if your media is linked to another location and there are only aliases in the FC Events folders.
Seems like FCP X is trying to “lock down” these files in some way via the OS. This makes round-tripping to other apps for grading very impractical if the media is imported into an Event as your SOP.

Luckily I only use aliases, so I can have my own subfolder-structure.
To be honest, I think it’s nuts that when you import into a FCP X Event, it all goes into one giant folder.
Must be a mess if you work with a lot of media.Your problem still is significant. Have you sent feedback to Apple about this?

What system are you on? The SAN or your local machine?

It’s the SAN system, but the media, Events, Projects are on local internal drives. If I move the media out of the Events folder but stay on the internal drives – OR – move it to any folder on a SAN volume – it plays fine.
And yes, I’ve reported it to Apple.

Normally I do as well, but this was a “consolidated” project, which puts all the media into the Events folders in the Original Media subfolder.
