  Where’s all my stuff

  So I’ve got it. My media files sit in my home folder – Final Cut Events – Event name folder – and there we have it two folders one called Original Media and one called transcoded media which has two folders the Pro Res (High Quality folder) and the proxy Media folder as I like to have both as recommended to me by the nice people at Apple.

  Trouble is the Transcoded Media folders do not seem to contain all the clips for some reason…they are all sitting in the Original Media folder.

  SO FCPX keeps a copy of all the Original Media even when you have decided to Import Optimised option?

  And then why are all the clips not visible in the Transcoded Media folders…that’s really weird isn’t it?

  Oh you may be asking why do I want to do this…well I rather hastily wiped the original cards and thought it would be useful to have the Pro Res files on another drive just in case I decide to cut this project in FCP7 if get too annoyed.

  As ever I appreciate your time in advance for reading this and giving feedback or advice.

  What format is your original footage?
  Did Transcoding actually take place? It usually takes some time and if you just imported your media and then quit out of fcpx then it may not have started the process.
  Is your High Quality Media folder completely empty?

  started out as AVCHD and the strange thing is there are about 10 of 50 shots in there…(50 in “original Media. All came off same SDHCcard.

  It’s just a test I shot with a Panasonic TM900 and some of the stuff is in their 1080i format s maybe that dd did not transcode but weird nevertheless

  FCP X does not transcode any media that it considers optimized for FCPX. It sounds as if 40 of your 50 shots are already optimized for X, leaving only 10 that needed to be transcoded. You can check this by opening one of the non-optimized clips (ie: one that is not duplicated in the Transcoded Media folder) in Quicktime. Use Get Info to read the codec information. Do the same with one of the clips that IS duplicated in the Transcoded Media folder. Check for a difference in codec, or codec/frame-rate.
