I filed a feature request at Apple: an option to duplicate Events without duplicating the actual media files. Sometimes I need footage to be outside Events folder for interoperability with other apps, as well for those cases when I don’t yet have all the media needed for editing. When I want to work on another computer, I duplicate Projects, but I also need to duplicate the Events. I know I can duplicate with only used clips, but when I’m given more footage, this becomes a pain to manage.

I’d be happy to just copy new media to any folder manually, import them to the master Event and then duplicate the master Event to my mobille drive at the end of the day. Right now, FCPX duplicates the event along with seemingly random selection of its footage (in this particular project, footage in this event is 600 GB and duplicating results in just over 100 GB of files). I don’t want to have these duplicate media files – I have them already.

Just give me a checkbox to “Include media files” in Duplicate Event dialog and I’m happy.

Totally. This would help with SAN based Events as well.

Have you guys tried manually copying and replacing the “currentevent” database file. So you duplicate the event and all media the first time, but the next time you want to update your copy, you just replace the database file in the event folder.

    Haven’t tried, but might work. . . ?
