  • Roles are driving me nuts when exporting

Roles are wonderful in a way and a real hassle in other ways. They force me to be super vigilant and organized, much more than FCP7 ever did. Just now, for example, I was exporting a 30min. movie consisting of several compound clips. These clips had preliminary audio mix included (with Mix role assigned). Then I got my final mix from the audio guy. I had then disabled the temp mix clips.

But they were present in the output Quicktime.

What bugs me the most is that the export doesn’t reflect the actual state of the timeline. If I disable roles, I expect them not to be exported. This makes for some very messy workflows. It forces organization that is not actually helpful.

Completely agree. We are using roles for organization which I don’t think Apple anticipated. Be sure to send them a feedback on Final Cut Pro Feedback. I can assure you that they will read it and log it.

Yes, Jiri. I can see how this is confusing. Check this out, it might make more sense:

When you “turn off” a Role in FCPX, you are really muting that role, similar to muting a track. This is a different function than disabling a track.

You actually have to disable the Role by searching for it in the Timeline index, select all the clips that have it and hit V. This disables the audio on export.

It’s a bug, or at best a bad implementation.

I would encourage all who read this post to give feedback to the Final Cut Pro team. The squeaky wheel will get the grease.

It makes sense that when you mute the roles, that they should not export.

Knowing that however, it’s not a huge deal. You just need to make sure that you don’t have that particular role set up for export.

You have to specifically assign roles for output. No assignment… no output.

I would love to see a way to color code the roles in the timeline, including roles that are combined inside a compound clip.

I have a check I do after I export a clip with roles. I drag it back into the end of my timeline, break the clip apart and visualize the clip to see if indeed the audio is separated the way I want it. I’ll often find an errant clip or two, and I’ll need to export again.

There’s also an issue with auditioned clips. I’ve had audio inside audition clips go to more than one role. It could be user error, however I find it annoying.
