Huge project files: ideas on archiving?
Hi,
Just noticed that the project file size for FCPX seem to be massive. 57GB for my last project and luckily only 15GB for my current project.
I say luckily as I archive to blu-ray 25GB discs. I guess i’m going to have to split the project file, but this gets a bit messy!
I’m sure FCP7 didn’t churn out this bigger files! Only the colour grading file, but not the project files. To be fair, I have colour graded both projects…

Seems the bulk of the memory is taken up in the ‘Events folder > ‘New Event’ (I didn’t name it). I don’t get this as the media is held elsewhere and surely FCPX is simply pointing to these files?
When I investigated, it appears it has actually imported the files and duplicated them, so the raw camera footage has been duplicated.
This is very annoying as now have to split media within that folder to archive. The only other way I can think to do it, is to just not copy this when I back up and then if I delve back into the project, dump all the files that I have already backed up separately (camera raw) into this folder and hopefully FCPX will recognise it. Have a sneaking suspicion this won’t work tho as it appears to have changed the file names in some cases, adding (id) to all EX1 camera files.
Did I select the wrong option when I first brought the footage into FCPX? Is there a way of avoiding this in future?

Have you tried deleting the render files by any chance?
Project Browser> Select a project> File pulldown> Delete Project Render Files.
But your thought on the fact that FCPX seems to be copying the media to the events folder has flummoxed me as it seems to occupy twice the size on my drives and I haven’t selected the “Copy to Events Folder” option. (I must be doing something wrong here, I’m sure of it but have been to afraid to poke my head above the proverbial trench line.)

If your sources files aren’t .mov, FCPX will convert them to .mov.
Do you have “optimize media” on?
What camera/recording system did your source files come from?

For me, I am importing mov’s from XDCAM (already converted).
As far as I am aware don’t have optimised media on. Unless its on by default?

How dare you importing media? Please give step by step.
If you are simply drag gin and dropping, you will notice the arrow icon turns in to a “+” sign which means it is copying the media to your Event.
Also, if you press command-option button while dragging/dropping, you will notice there’s no plus sign, but rather an arrow, which does NOT copy the media to the Event, so the media stays where it is.
If you use the Import Files command (command-shift-i) then you have more control over how the media comes in.
