Hex Color Picker in FCPX?
Posted by Chris Frantz on April 28, 2012 at 2:28 amIs there anyway to choose a proper hex color in FCPX? It’s driving me nuts, a client has three different very specific colors that need to be included in the one title I’m using from FCPX, and a bloody color picker from a box of crayons (REALLY APPLE?) isn’t cutting it for me.
Any help would be appreciated.

April 28, 2012 at 3:30 amI think there are five different color pickers in the Apple color picker. You don’t have to use crayons. You can enter RGB or CMYK values. There is a web safe palette that let’s you search hex. It may not correspond to output because video is RGB. No way around that. You’re client’s design people may need to come up with RGB values.
All the best,
Tom

April 28, 2012 at 3:53 amI found a dropdown menu in the sliders tab of the color picker which allows me to dial in the color via the RGB values (there’s also a CMYK slider btw). The crayon comment was more of a wtf apple moment, I’m still kind of awestruck at the audacity to take up an entire section of a color picker with a box of crayons rather than give me bezier handles on my keyframes. /rant

April 28, 2012 at 6:52 amThe color picker isn’t part of FCP. It’s a system wide color picker and part of the OS. It can open in any app that uses a color picker, even Photoshop. Any color placed on a swatch in the drawer is available to all applications that access the color picker on your computer.
All the best,
Tom

But Tom,
Chris wants to be angry. Invoking objective reality seldom has much effect on someone in that state. I know this to be true because I have a teenager at home.

“Mr Frantz,
Nice response. Light. Simple. Stuck to your arguments while appreciating that the tone might have come across stronger than intended.
Well played sir!
