Parenting a matte to a null object.
Posted by Todd Segal on December 12, 2010 at 12:35 amIs it possible to parent the position and rotation of a matte to a null object?

December 12, 2010 at 6:03 pmIf you are referring to a ‘mask’, then no. Masks are a series of points, each with different position coordinates. This also means they do not have a rotation property. So there is no way to simply parent the mask to the null.
However, you can create the ‘mask’ on a separate layer, then parent the layer to the null and use it as a ‘matte’.

December 14, 2010 at 6:47 pmHere’s info on Track Mattes. I would do as Jesse suggests and put the mask on another layer, parent that layer to your null, and use it as a track matte.
Here’s a tutorial for an alternate method of getting a mask to follow a subject.
