  • run final cut x on an external firewire drive

would it be workable to install and run final cut x on an external firewire drive instead of having to partition my startup drive – which i guess means clearing it off and partitioning, etc?

    thanks.

It needs to be on the system drive. You could install the OS on the external drive and then put FCP in that. Boot into the external when you want to run FCP.

    All the best,

    thanks tom.

it might be appealing to do this just so i won’t have to clear me current system HD in order to partition it, reinstall everything, etc. i’m partitioning because i am running fc 7 on the current system. is that overkill to partition or will they both run ok on my current HD?

Both run fine on my machine, just can’t run them at the same time. I think the advice to partition your system drive to run 2 copies of FCP is ridiculous and not practical for most people.

I’ve been running both since day one. Occasionally the wrong version of Motion will open, but that’s about it.

    Just follow the Apple instructions.
