I promise I’ll try and RTFM too, but I’ve finally taken the plunge and downloaded the trial version. I’m going to ask some idiotic questions and I fully appreciate your constructive answers. Many thanks.
(some of it I’m liking already)
1. Is there a way of moving where the ‘connection’ is for a connected clip or is it always 1st frame? (e.g. maybe I would like the sync to be the end of a the piece / music sting)
2. Is there a way of marking a section of a connected clip and then deleting that section? (e.g. remove a couple of bars of a music track) – seems like you can’t have an edit in a connected clip it has to make another clip
3. As a workaround, having converted music to compound clip in order to edit it and keep it within one ‘clip’I found the shorcuts “[ ] ” for left/right/both edges in precision editor… is there a ‘toggle edges’ command (keyboard shortcut “U” in FCP7)?
4. Is there no ‘source timecode’ indication? (e.g. so I can keep in my head how much I am trimming)
5. Any way of ‘match framing’ into the compound clip? (doesn’t seem to be an ‘enter compound clip’ shortcut)

Lot of questions here, probably easier for all if you break them up, but I’ll give it a shot.
1. Yes. Opt-Cmd click on the connected clip to change the connection point.
2. Yes. Make a range selection on the clip and delete it. This will leave a gap. You could convert the connected clip to a storyline, Cmd-G, then when you make the range selection and delete, the timeline magnetism will close the gap, whichever works for what you want to do.
3. There is no U equivalent, just the three adjacent keys [ ] .
4. The selection amount in the timeline appears in the tooltip while you’re making the selection and at the bottom of the timeline panel. There is no source timecode display in the timeline.
5. Not sure quite what you mean with this one. You enter a compound clip by double clicking it. If you mean go to the same frame under the playhead in the compound clip that you’re under in the timeline, there isn’t, but it would be a useful feature. There needs to be more match framing options in the app.

Thanks Tom, you nailed them all, although range selection seems a bit clunky for marking points.

Any way of adding a compound clip to the event browser for reuse?

You can’r move a compound clip from the project to the browser. You can make a compound clip in the browser and copy and paste or add content to it there.

Seems a no-brainer that once you’ve compounded clips you’d want them available for re-use.
Is there any other form of nesting or subsequence? I guess creating a compound clip and then copy/paste is the workaround…
With the range selections, I’ve RTFM and can make the selection with the cursor or use X to mark the whole connected clip, but I and O default back to marking the primary storyline despite what it says in the fine manual.
And if you’ve any questions about obscure linear editors I’ll be there to answer them for you… 😉

Forget the range thing.. now it is working – dont select the connected clip first
