  • Some thoughts about Motion Template installation …

Posted by Andreas Kiel on January 29, 2012 at 5:40 pm

With legacy versions of FCS it was pretty easy to install filters, generators etc. for all users/accounts on a machine. You even where able to build a nice installer with donation ware like IceBerg without knowing anything about programming.
With X it’s a bit more more complicated for all the nice guys/gals who provide the community with nice free Motion Templates. They have to explain exactly how and where to install the template, explain why themes are important. For the happy customer/user it’s the same especially if he wants to install the templates for several accounts on the machine – boring and time consuming.
Additionally if a template is only installed for one user and another user will open it, the ‘specials’ are ignored and famous ‘auto-save’ will do the rest. So you can spoil a lot in a very short time.
FCS not really had been better, but at least a serious ‘second’ user was able to make a ‘save as’.

So while thinking about those and more things, a built a little app, which allows – both creators and users of custom Motion Templates – to handle the installation easier.

A first beta is available here: https://www.spherico.com/filmtools/MotionTemplateHandler/Motion%20Template%20Installer.app.zip

It’s called a beta because it’s quite far away from what the results of my thoughts are. And there is also no manual, but the app is quite self-explaining. It’s not beta in the way what it does. You can install a lot of templates for a lot of users with a few clicks – as long a theme is applied to a template.
The app is free and can be freely distributed with free templates you want to share – like for Simon or Alex.

    Hi Andreas

This sounds like a genius idea – many, many thanks for sharing this and so much else of your great work.

For some reason however when I try to launch the app it tells me I haven’t got Final Cut Pro X installed … am I doing something wrong?

    Hi Simon,

Thanks, a very odd but very good point.

While the app is launching it searches the standard file path for FCPX to get the version of ‘FCPany’ – it’s similar to that what an updater from Apple would do.
Obviously your FCPX app is not at the ‘right’ place in regards of the search path the app looks for, therefore the app doesn’t find the FCPX app.
But finally it doesn’t matter somehow whether FCPX is installed or not or where it is installed.
I will upload a new version tomorrow which doesn’t care about FCPX installation paths.

Maybe you can do some simple thing. Open the Terminal.app and drag the FCPX app to the terminal window. This will give a result/display for the installation path. You could send me result.

    Hi Andreas

You are absolutely right – this is the reason. Because I am still principally using Legacy rather than X, I am keeping X in a folder of its own:

    /Applications/Final Cut Pro X/Final Cut Pro.app

… and leaving the FCS3 suite in its original folder.

    Many thanks again.

    Hi Simon,

I’ve uploaded a version which doesn’t do the check.

    Hi Andreas

That’s brilliant – all works perfectly.

The only thing I stumbled over was that I didn’t immediately realize that you had to apply a theme for the installer do do its work. Maybe this ought to be optional or perhaps have some hint to the user that applying a theme is a necessary step.

Other than that, a really great idea beautifully executed. Many thanks!!!

    Hi Simon,

You’re right. There should be a manual. But as long even basic things are changing it doesn’t to much sense for me.

I do need people like you to test the basics of the app in outer world.
The next version will have an XML parser integrated that will allow to view and modify the Motion XML’s template theme. That will allow at a later state people like you to build a small installer script.
There will be a new version by tomorrow.

That sounds like a really nice feature – can’t wait to see where you’re going with this. Thanks again.

    Hi Simon,

There is a new version available.
    https://www.spherico.com/filmtools/MotionTemplateHandler/Motion%20Template%20Installer.app.zip

This version allows to change both template and theme. Still no manual available – I’ve to look at 10.0.3 first as well as for the new Motion.

Below some screenshots which might help to understand:

    Hi all,

I think I’ll get a version 1.0 out at the weekend.
I’ve uploaded a preliminary Help File
    https://www.spherico.com/filmtools/MotionTemplateHandler/MTT%20Help.pdf

Would be great if you can have a look at the v1 features – all other comments are appreciated as well.
