Greetings! New user to FCP X. Longtime Vegas Video Pro user, but trying to learn FCP X. In Vegas Video there was a method to render a piece of footage from the time line as a seperate clip, without rendering the rest of the project. Is this doable in FCP X? Is this what “Roles” are used for? I am in the process of watching a bunch of tutorial videos, but have not had that question answered yet.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give this newbie!!

Perhaps there is some terminology that is different.

    – “Rendering” in Final Cut is the process of processing the effects, etc on a clip in a timeline so that it plays back smoothly.
    – “Exporting” is getting a QuickTime file out of FCP X for use elsewhere. Currently in FCP X, exports are for an entire timeline.

Therefore if you need to Render a portion of your timeline, just choose “Modify > Render Selection”. But if you need to export a portion of your timeline, copy and paste it to a new Project timeline, or Compound Clip in your event.

You can also just select the clip(s) and then press control+R. I turn off background rendering, it makes me crazy.
