This Zoom Thing is Killing Me
Has anyone discovered an effective work-around to the zoom bug in FCPX? When I invoke zoom using “z” as often as not I end up somewhere undesired. Curiously, this sometimes happens when I undo (cmd-z) as well.

I came here to post this. The management on FCP 7 was WAY better. The Ken Burns effect isn’t as great as creating keyframes.

FCP7 had Media management? WOW which version did you use?
Not sure why you came here to post something that is not related to this topic???
But to your Ken Burns why not be proactive and use keyframes? -
The keyframes aren’t working for me. It’s really frustrating. The keyframes worked just fine on fcp7.
I was talking about the management of the media in the middle browser. Where you can manipulate the keyframes.

Let me clarify my initial post. I’m talking about zooming to a portion of the timeline–not “zooming” e.g. the Ken Burns effect. BTW, did Apple really have to call it the “Ken Burns” effect?

Hey Rich i am having the exact same problem, when i zoom using (cmd + ) sometimes it takes me to the cursor and sometimes it goes anywhere !! i don’t know what’s wrong but it’s really annoying me !

As a work around try using a trackpad instead of a mouse if you can. I’ve found the pointer causes FCPX to freak out if it is left over parts of the timeline and you try to use the keyboard. If you use a tackpad the pointer only becomes active when your figures touch the pad. With a mouse, the pointer is active all the time. Make sure you unplug your mouse if you use a tackpad.
Also, if you hold down “alt” it will deactivated the playhead when you want to select something in the timeline.

When you use cmd + or – go one step further and you come back to your initial position. It seems to be just one zoom level that starts traveling.

One thing I noticed is that the zoom issue (with CMD +) crops up whenever any tool other than the arrow tool is selected.
