Scrolling Timeline
I am creating a new thread here after realising that my response to a thread entitled ‘Playhead Focus’ from July this year is not likely to be seen by anyone, though I could be wrong…in which case I’m sure someone will inform me!
I’m used to audio applications, such as Wavelab, Logic, etc and am really missing a scrolling timeline in FCPX. I thought there must be a way to have the screen move to keep up with the playhead, but perhaps there’s not. Yet it seems like a feature that would be really useful, so I am surprised at it not being present.
Or am I just working in a non-standard way and everyone else is perfectly happy with things as they are?
I’d be interested to know what you guys think and whether we should be badgering Apple for this feature!

Everybody I think would like the timeline to scroll. Everybody would have liked the timeline to scroll since version 1 of FCP. It never made it into v7. Hopefully we won’t have to wait as long for it to make it into FCPX.

Ah, interesting – I wonder why it hasn’t featured (yet)…too complex with video? Surely not. So, come on Apple, give the people what they want (please)!

oh the joy … the very thought of a scrolling timeline.
I will say this though, it is bliss to be able to watch a timeline and drop promo clips and other things on to it as it plays without missing a beat. I couldn’t do that in 7.Cheers

OK, this must be a feature of X that I’m either not aware of or haven’t used yet…. are you dropping the clips onto the timeline from the library or browser, or both? I’m not sure where or why I’d use this function, Wayne: can you expand on this?

I do a weekly 30 minute broadcast which comes off a live mix from 3 cameras. The original footage is usually about 40-50 minutes long and after colour correction, I just drop it on the timeline and listen to it for places to edit and cut.
The timeline is a pre-made project with the opener piece already in place and the ending at exactly the right timing.
But while I am listening, I might notice that it needs a pre-made promo (Title made in Motion) dropped on the timeline. or perhaps a title needs shifting along a bit. In FCPX the timeline does not stop playing while titles are dropped on or moved, which makes the whole process much quicker than it was in version 7 which would stop playing as soon as you tried to do anything.
But like you, I would like a scrolling timeline.Cheers

Well, I have to admit to not really understanding exactly what you’re talking about, Wayne, as it’s beyond my experience! But it’s good to hear that FCPX is being praised by someone on the pro side. I actually bought FCP4 about 8 years ago to run on my new Apple laptop, but just never got into it (and hence wasted £800!). But now I’m really enjoying getting into some serious documentary-style film making with the completely rewritten program – much sexier, know-whar-I-mean!?

There are some really good things about it to praise, and a lot of the things it is being slammed for … I don’t need.

I couldnt agree with you more. We need a scrolling timeline without a doubt (and a host of other things lol).
Doesnt seem to be implemented as of yet anyway…________________________________

OK, so how do we get suggestions of improvements to the relevant team at Apple – do they watch this forum? Do they listen to any suggestions from ‘outside’…? I’m sure they must!
