Mono and Stereo in FCPX
I am making training videos for a government client. I have had to record voiceovers for several projects and I am using the Apogee One recorded directly into FCPX and I am happy with the quality but I am having the following issue.
When I export the video I am only able to hear the VO out of one side, it’s a mono signal. I need it to be stereo because of the diversity of the playback devices. If one speaker does not work they miss out on all of the content.
If I have a stereo signal turning it into a duel mono is no problem in FCPX but if I start with a mono signal how can I duplicate that onto a right and left channel.
Also setting FCPX to record stereo when using the one has a very undesirable loss in audio quality, and I need to use the mono voiceovers I have already recorded.Luke Hale

So when you playback on the timeline it is stereo? And the audio meters show the VO in both the left and right channels?
Is your project set to stereo or surround?

Try setting the Pan Mode to Stereo Left/Right and see if that does it for you.

Same thing happening to us. I made a couple of videos in FCPX and the videos were silent talking heads. They videos played fine on YouTube but on TV, the channel one audio was missing.
I brought the video into FCP 7 and re-sent it out because we weren’t having issues with FCP7.
Make sure your project is on stereo and make sure the pan is in the middle and that the pan is not on -1 or +1.

No the project only shows the one signal. However I do think that I am editing surround sound because I see all six channels. I would like to edit in stereo, how do I make that change to an existing project?
Altho it only shows one channel I still hear duel mono when editing on headphones. It is only after I export that I hear the one channel (perhaps because I am in surround sound).

Use Cmd-J for project properties. Click the wrench in the lower right and change the project properties.

Apple nailed a lot of concepts in FCP X. Defaulting projects to Surround is still a little ahead of it’s time. 😉

I often set the panning to the preset “Dialog” and that seems to work. I have noticed sometimes using the stereo left/right that no matter what the panning, it still wants to only play out of one speaker! I think it’s a bug…

I think that happens when the project is set to surround output.

In my case, yes it does.
=> I am having the same problem. On the project/timeline I hear in both sides but when I export it I hear only in one side.
– In “Channel Configuration” the Channel is set as “mono-centre”. I have also had that set as Surround 5.1, but when exported it was only in one side.
– Pan Mode is set to “Stereo left/right”.
I’have tried Channel Configuration set as “Mono only” and Pan Mode set as “none”. When exported, the audio was only on one side.Is your project set to stereo or surround?
=> In my case, the project is set by default to surround. Is there a way to “change” the existing project to “stereo”? Can someone say how change it? step-by-step please.
I’ve tried “Use Cmd-J for project properties. Click the wrench in the lower right and change the project properties” but didn’ really work.Solutions that Worked (audio exported to both sides)
Option 1: – I created a completely New Project and Customised the Audio to “Stereo” (when exported the audio was in both sides).
Option 2: – I exported the existing project (with audio in one side only so I could use the Video). Then I exported again but in “Export” option I choose “Audio Only,” and set that to MP3 File.
Then I created a New Project with the default setting as “Surround.” In there I placed in the Timeline the “newly exported Video” (I “detached” the audio off the Video and disabled/trashed that audio). Then I added the “newly exported Audio (mp3)” in the Timeline, and the Channels could be Configured as either “Dual Mono” or “Stereo”.
When this project was exported the Audio was in both sides.I hope this can help.
