FCPX live capture from Canon HDV
We have an older Canon XH A1 HDV that we have setup with a PC using Sony Vegas. I have a Mac at home. They will be moving us to a Mac next year using FCPX. However, I have not been able to make our setup work on my new iMac at home; that is: connect the Cannon to my Mac and capture the live video to the Mac at the same time I record it to the tape. I can only assume I am not the first to attempt this on a Mac and would like input from anyone who has been successful.

I’ve done some live capture in FCP X. But I never tried (or thought) to record to tape at the same time.
What exactly is the trouble you are having. Can you explain in more detail what doesn’t work?

The real issue is that in order to record, the camera must be in camera mode (this is a back up copy to the live capture to the HD). FCPX only seems to want to capture when the camera is in VCR/VTR mode. I can do both- capture to HD and record to tape in camera mode using Vegas. I really want this to work on the Mac so we can make the switch. I am operating under the assumption that my inexperience with FCPX is what is stopping me.

I just did a test right now on my system with a Canon HV30 (HDV camera) and FCP X did simultaneous live capture and record to tape without a problem. However, I needed to start the recording on the camera get the timecode going, and then click “import”. If you don’t start your camera first clicking import will look like it is doing something but the import window will not show camera recording.
I was able to plug in an older Sony SD camera and FCP X did let me start importing without the camera rolling but it didn’t actually import anything.
So it does work, you’ll just have to experiment to see if you have to start recording on the camera first, etc.
FCP X wasn’t really made for live recording as it doesn’t have any scopes while recording, etc. so if you have further needs why don’t you look into a dedicated app like this:

New to forum, you’ve probably solved your problem by now but if you are still using the XHA1 or still having issues while trying to capture with fcpx, try using firewire 400 1394 9pin-4pin.
