  Moving Projects back and forth without having to move media more than once.

  I’m an event videographer. Usually inside every event, there are different projects we work on. For example on Weddings, we might do a Short Film, a Ceremony cut, Toasts, etc. Something I’ve been doing is capture everything to a Main computer and give my editors an individual project to work on by Duplicating the media that they would need on an external Hard Drive. When they are done we move/duplicate the finished project to the main computer from their Hard Drive.

  So far I haven’t had to duplicate more than the project to the main computer, I would only duplicate it, turn off FCPX so I could eject the outsourced drive. When opening FCPX again, my project would be offline, but I would just press “Modify Event Reference” and it would find the media on my Main drive.

  This has worked for me more than once, but today I tried doing the same thing and it won’t connect the project to the Media from my Main Drive, it will insist on having me connect the outsourced drive.

  Have I’ve been lucky so far to fool the program somehow till today, or is there something I’m doing wrong today that I haven’t figured it out? So in a nutshell I guess the question would be, what is the best workflow to work on projects on different machines and merging the project to an existing event without having to duplicate media?

  Well after a couple of hours of pulling my hair and trying to figure it all out ‘I THINK’ I found an answer.

  My first three projects didn’t have compound clips in them whereas the last one did. I’m guessing since creating a compound clip does something different in the Events folder, the program decides that the Events folder on the Main computer is different than the one on the outsourced file, therefore the outsourced project can’t reference the Main computer Event, even when they have the exact same media.

  To test this, I erased the compound clips from the outsourced project, then I clicked “Modify Reference Event” and it let me choose my Main Drive Event just like it had with the 3 projects before.
