How to add Transition Effects to Titles
Quick and easy:
1. In your timeline, select the title layer you want to add a transition effect to.
2. Press Cmd+G (or right-click and select “Create Storyline”). This will turn it into a “storyline” which functions like a video clip.
3. Select the Transitions Browser and add your effect of choice (cross dissolve, fade to color, blur, whatever) to the beginning/end of the clip.
4. That’s it. You’re done.
The best part is that AFTER you turn your title into a storyline, you can still alter it in the inspector. It doesn’t lock up or anything so you’re free to edit the text, color, etc. I experimented with different transition effects and they worked perfectly on my title text.

for some reason even thought i create the title to have a storyline the transition still affects the video below it. why is that?

For some reason it stopped doing that.

Now it doesn’t do that any more.

Did you ever figure that out? I’m having the same problem. I create title, add it, and create secondary storyline. Add transition, and it affects the clip in the primary (below the title as well.

Nope, I did not find a solution.
The problem is fundamental to the software. Not all transitions are like this. I doubt it will ever get fixed.
The best solution is to export it as a mov file with alpha using prores 422 (I believe).
