Rigging-Publishing feature
Posted by Jim Bachalo on June 26, 2011 at 5:25 pmPretty excited after reading about the new Rigging Publish feature of FCPX and Motion 5.

Really seems like a MUCH better and more tightly integrated workflow than PPro to AE.
I’ve been waiting and reading as much as possible before investing any money and more importantly, more time in mastering FCPX.
This may have convinced me.Local is the new global

I’d say that’s a bit of an exaggeration until we know a bit more about how it’s actually going to handle anything other than FCPX templates as it can’t yet send anything else such as browser clips or timeline events, though this is bound to come very soon. The rigging and publishing features are definitely a neat trick however if all you need Motion for is to adapt templates.
I’m hoping that it’s going to develop more fully as a compositing tool as well, for example handing off rotoscoping jobs which FCPX is clearly not meant to cope with (I’d also like to see Shake-style rotoscoping with proper edge feathering control rather the AE style global feather that we’re still stuck with). It will definitely be the place go to for a better key as the keying tools in Motion 5 are much improved (still not great) and the keyer in FCPX is very, very basic.

June 26, 2011 at 6:34 pmI’ve already modified some of the stock filters under “Light” that simulate lens flares and such.
I one of them in FCPX, “Open Copy In Motion” and then replaced the fake flares with real flares I’ve shot as FX elements for other jobs. I also applied a hue/saturation filter to the footage, and published the parameter.
So now I have multiple custom filters in the FCPX “Light” filters category, saving a few steps applying them to shots when I need.
Now it’s just a filter, used to be a second layer of video where I’d have to tweak composite method, opacity and usually put a 3 way color corrector too to get color to match.

June 26, 2011 at 8:13 pmShare what? The plugs I made?
One, they’re very big because they have footage in them.
Two, some of them have flares I bought from Crumplepop in them.
Three, the remainders are leftovers from a show open for a show on Bravo that I shot that are kinda my special sauce. Sorry, mine 🙂
