I have a Mid 2015 MacBook Pro and a not-so-new external monitor. I’d like to get a new one, at least 27″ that could be plugged into either the HDMI or one of the Thunderbolt sockets. I don’t need the best but I’ll happily pay around $500 – so my wife tells me. Any suggestions, please?

    Love the Dells.
We have the old/new Apple Cinemas (all sizes) some LG 4K but the Dells U2711 (older) rock and newer Dell UltraSharp 32 4Ks.
Now, of course, those are north of 1K but anything lower from Dell might do the trick.

Thanks for the reply Eric. I’ll definitely bear the Dells in mind.

Apart from the size and the connectors one other feature I’m looking for is manual control over the brightness. I sit next to the window and although the Macbook Pro does an excellent job at adjusting for ambient light, my old external monitor is almost hostile in that respect.

    Hi Brian

Get a 27′ Apple Thunderbolt Display, a used one. They are around 300.- to 700.- CHF (in Switzerland), often in very good condition. Take look at tutti.ch or anibis.ch or ricardo.ch
You can tap in the level of brightness like on your macbook.
The quality of the build is unreached
The display has beautiful colors and is very bgriht, (I often use it around 70% brightness)
    the resolution 2560×1440 is great
thunderbolt 2 connection fits directly in your macbook 2015
you can provide your macbook with power with the magsafe cable coming from the display

I found one for 220.- CHF and I couldn’t be happier with any other monitor sitting next to my 27′ imac 2017

    best regards from Zürich
    Lutz

Actually I’m frequently on those sites looking for additional Panasonic X900M camcorders to add to the five I already have. Picked up four from tutti so far! (I video lots of amateur and school shows round here) Keeps me busy!

We have a few of those put away due to the glare issues.
Replaced them all with the Dells/LG/
I am hanging on to dear life with the Apple Cinema 30s.
We have 4 left but one down due to power block.
Just need to replace that part.
    I hope 🙁

Yes, Apple Thunderbolt Displays reflect a lot, but not much more than iMacs. Let’s be honest: normal editors live in a cave. At least I do, I do not have any reflections of a window anywhere. If you do, avoid glaring displays. It already helps a lot if the windows are in front of your workspace and not in your back.

Oh fine, no problem, I’ve got the spare bedroom as my studio and the window is just beyond my right shoulder so no glare!

I’m really looking forward to this Apple option. Makes so much sense. Really glad you saw my post. I had started thinking about the Asus 31.5” monitor but I’ll hold off for the time being.
