Next FCPX Update
Posted by Jay Soriano on May 27, 2019 at 5:39 pmBlackmagic is pretty swift in releasing Davinci Resolve updates. Any educational guesses when Apple will release FCP 10.4.7? Next major update10.5?

May 27, 2019 at 7:31 pmAt WWDC they’ll be a still of a new Mac Pro and or a new Monitor. On the kKeynote slide with the monitor, there will be a very brief still frame of the FCPX interface.
The Kremlinologists will take screenshots of the still and blow it up, examining for any new icons or other changes in the interface. There will be at least one icon not quite clearly discernable enough and there will be debates over whether it’s related to a tracker or a roles based audio mixer.
The debate will rage on for days and the Cow will be quite happy with the sudden increase in this forum’s views. Then the release will come and you will hear mutterings about switching to Resolve and battles with the stalwarts.

Yes, the Snapchat Sharing option 🙂

May 28, 2019 at 8:50 amAnd in the meantime BMD will release half a dozen feature updates for Resolve.
Development on FCPX is clearly slowing down, hopefully because Apple are busily working on FCPXI

Despite history we can remain delusional and happy.
EDIT. Bill will be along shortly to tell us why we don’t need anything changed

May 28, 2019 at 10:16 amHistory tells us that every time there is a long pause between feature updates for FCP X, they are working on a major one. There is usually one year between such updates and the latest one was on November 15 last year. That’s why I don’t expect any big feature update before the end of this year, or even later. In the meantime, there is nothing in Final Cut Pro that prevents us from cutting anything we wish on it and the user base is constantly growing. Anything that gets added to FCP X is welcome, as long as it does not affect its core features which are performance and reliability.

May 28, 2019 at 12:18 pmI think there’s a bit of a misconception about just how fast BMD’s development of Resolve really is. Yes, they do tons of updates, but many of these are really just little tweaks. A few reasons for this perception, IMHO.
1) There’s more development (and therefore updates) required, because of the work necessary to clean up code and functionality issues created by integrating diverse audio and effects software acquired from other companies.
2) There’s also a bit of catch-up, in the sense that they developed and integrated their own RAW codec (same as FCPX did with ProRes RAW).
3) Finally, BMD releases early public betas, which go through frequent updates, making it appear that there is more activity than other companies go through. In fact, other companies do the same, just not in public.
Remember that BMD is not afraid to completely upset things either. Look at the evolution of its audio tools from the few versions before Fairlight to now (after Fairlight). It’s been a complete rework (and therefore obsolescence of earlier versions) in how you deal with audio mixing and plug-ins within Resolve.

Amen to that at least.

“This whole post is quality analysis from Oliver, IMO.
All Resolve really needs to do to become a contender for me is to lose the “tracks” metaphor, license X’s magnetic approach, and do something like Roles.
Not holding my breath.

Thanks, Bill. Somehow I don’t think Grant has the mindset to license anything ☺
