[Scott Witthaus] “Anyone heading out there next week? Looking forward to seeing Disney’s new short VR film.

Just got back from my holidays.
I was hoping I had funds left to fly over to the West coast.
Hope its a good one, sorry I had to miss it again 🙁

Yes, pretty amazing stuff with really really smart people. I certainly will be back next year.

Ran into a BMD rep in the cab line at the airport. Evidently this person was suddenly sent to SIGGRAPH to demo the egpu unit. They are quite proud.

Will be intrigued to see what happens with the new NVIDIA GPUs that Red have helped develop for 8K real-time editing. Requires an open egpu like the sonnet or a chassis based Mac/pc with pcie but looks brilliant

I’m just watching the NVIDIA announcement of their new Turing chip GPUs which are 6 x more powerful than the Pascal chipset. I’m still trying to get my head around the leap in performance with these new chips. I know a lot is about CGI but the implication for video is also amazing.

One thing that strikes me is how much better denoise, optical flow and stabilisation can become. Using AI I can see manipulation of images speeding up enormously and getting smarter as the AI learns. Object removal, generated sky enhancement/replacement – all sorts of combinations of photo real CGI with live action. Even for docos have I been needing this sort of compute power. All this with reduced power consumption

EDIT: towards the end they list companies working with these new RTX cards. Adobe CC and Resolve are the only NLEs. The implications for Apple in their ongoing NVIDIA snub might be significant.
