I’m trying to put a counter on a project and I’ve got it up and running, but I want to mask the hours and minutes. I’m using the solid layer-effect-time-number way. As soon as I click in the layer window the time code disappears and the mask doesn’t work. The time code is still there when I switch back to composition view however. What am I missing? Thanks.

To go a little more in depth:
A layer is just a layer, sans any effects. So when you go to the layer view, you’re seeing the layer. Effects come later in the rendering stack.
Here’s the help page on track mattes. Honestly, most of the pages in the help document are worth looking at. However, if you want a more user-friendly way to learn, check out this page and its accompanying links.
