Z channel in AE
Posted by Mstleger on November 18, 2005 at 8:31 pmHey, I’ve got an IFF image sequence I need to composite using z depth. Anyone do this before? I’m pretty sure I need to switch to another image format, as AE cannot read z channel from an iff. What next?

November 18, 2005 at 8:54 pmDid you try using the z channel effect? I’m rendering right now so I can’t see the right category but I think it’s in Channel or maybe 3D Effects? You apply the effect and then you can pull a depth of field, etc. Search the filters for depth of field or 3D glasses, it should be in the same category

November 18, 2005 at 9:37 pmThanks, i checked it out, but still no luck. I’m attempting to apply two render passes to eachother- one is a cloth pass, the other a character pass. The cloth was rendered as a whole, without the proper alpha to just drop it on the character (you can see inside the collar and sleeves). We’ve got to do this on 100+ shots with multiple characters, or re-render the 3d with a proper alpha. I’m hoping to make it work in AE. I’ve tried converting the shot to an RLA sequence, and all the 3d plug-ins. I know this works in Shake, but no luck here.

November 19, 2005 at 2:28 amNot sure about the 3d- and Z-channels in IFF-files, but Z works pretty much OK when rendering to RLA or RFE from cinema 4D… (some aliasing issues though)
If you get stuck, don’t know from what app you’re rendering, maybe you can find a third-party plug-in or program that converts or outputs your IFF-Z to a greyscale 8 or 16 bit image-sequence.
You might be able to use that Greyscale in conjunction with perhaps the “gradient wipe” to mimic 3d compositing effects.
