Industry map?
I just refreshed my iPhone App For NAB 2017 and decided to pull up the floor map and do a quick look to see who’s where.
Interesting to note that this year, Amazon Web Services has significantly more booth floor space than some of the giant classic NAB names of the past.
More even than some of the upstart “digital” outfits that once pulled focus a decade plus ago from the broadcast companies that NAB was built on.
And radio is nearly gone.

As there’s more and more real consideration for the “cloud” (something that means a lot of different things to different folks), I think you’ll see more of the IT companies at shows like these. Not just Amazon, but others that have been around for a while, like Media Silo, Signiant, Aspera, and others.

The whole idea of trade shows is a throw back to the days when gear was super expensive and it was easier to move people to the gear. Now it makes almost no sense to go to a trade show apart from putting faces and real personalities to online names. I haven’t been to one for ten years

I on the other hand, feel blessed to be able to go and find it MASSIVELY worth the cost.
It’s not about the STUFf anymore. You’re right that getting info about stuff is WAY easier over the internet today.
But if your career depends on a particular industry – the chance to sit and have a chat with the people who’s work DRIVES that industry is unmatchable.
