  Playing back audio in After Effects CS4

  Hi,

  I am new to after effects, and I cannot get sound to play within the timeline of my composition.

  I am able to successfully drag the mp3 file to the timeline, and can press (LL) to see the correct sound waves. However when I press play, I can’t hear anything, only see the animation.

  The only way I can preview the audio is if I go to:
  composition>preview>audio> audio preview “here forward”

  then I can hear the song, but the animation isn’t playing.

  Can someone please tell me what step I am missing.

  Michelle,

  This thew me for a loop, too, when other compositors seem to play/scratch audio as you preview the timeline..

  To do it in AE: you can hold down CTRL (Option on a MAC I think) and scrub the Current Time Indicator to hear a scratch track..

  Or, you can hit ‘.’ (decimal) on the numpad to play the audio, but the video doesn’t update..

  Or, you can hit ‘0’ (zero) on the numpad and it caches the work area and plays back the audio and video (but this takes a few seconds)..

  Hey Matthew,
  Thanks for your help! Still not there yet tho..

  So “apple” on my macbook pro works to scratch the track. But its not going to help with animating text with lyrics of a song. 🙁

  the “.” doesn’t work, nor does the “0” zero because I am on a macbook pro, so there isn’t a numberpad.

  Know of anything else?

  Ahh, I didn’t know that.. I’m on a PC notebook and it has an embedded numpad, it comes in really handy for hotkeys..

  managed to get it to work on my Macbook pro
  with this.

  it enables you to use the fn (function) button on your keyboard therefore using all the shortcuts you would have on the number pad.
