I have a long animation with quite a few layers and nested pre-comps, but the client now wants the whole thing to be shorter. A proportional compression of all the keyframes would work, or at least get me started, but I think that may not work with all the nested comps, and that if I do it in the main comp and the nested comps don’t compress I think I will have a big mess

What am I not thinking of?

You could use time-stretching or time-remapping on the master/root composition by nesting it in another composition and manipulating the single precomposition layer.
