August 18, 2014 at 5:33 pmThe plug in cost won’t be the issue: the cost of robotic arms moving the projectors around in realtime will be. Tech like this though, makes it easier as time goes by to map new actors’ facial performances onto a stand-in’s face. Fist, in post production alone, but not too long from now, live on stage, as “digital makeup”.

The subject was, of course, a joke. I have now added a smiley face.

The projector is static. The content is dynamically manipulated to look correct from one camera/viewer’s perspective when projected.

Fair… but are you suggesting the talent was a robot? This video just keeps getting cooler!

August 18, 2014 at 6:34 pmNo, the video I linked had robots.
You can never have enough robots. I don’t care what the Wachowski Bros. think. More robots, ma!

I know, I design a couple of projection mapping projects every year. I was attempting humor. I failed to append the smiley.
Box was a phenomenally cool project. I wish I had seen it live. Not just the technology, but really great art direction.
Have you seen the behind-the-scenes they did?

Yes, NOW it is…. in the future, though, I can imagine an overlay composited onto the live face in real time.

The future is now, or very close to it.
I was just saying you can do it all by dynamically manipulating the content — no need to move the projector for the illusion to work.
