New to it all…Where to start?
Hi everyone.
I am a fairly experienced Photoshop, Final Cut and Protools user, and I am just moving into After Effects now. I have a fairly good understanding of the fundamentals of After Effects, but I’m just not sure where to start with the tutorials and such.
Is there a particular skill or element of the program that I should really emphasize? Or, is the importance of particular skills contingent on what one plans on using After Effects for?
After watching several tutorials, I still don’t know where to start!Any advice would be really appreciated.

When I was new, I just started with Aharon’s podcast tutorials here at the Cow. Even basic tutorials can be difficult to follow at first because there is inevitably some piece of terminology you don’t understand or a tool you don’t know how to use. But if you pick and choose what seem to be the simplest tutorials and follow through with them you’ll be fine. Even if you don’t understand – keep listening and watching those tutorials. AE is one of the most user friendly programmes out there and you’ll surely get it in the end.

Picking up one of the AE “Classroom in a Book” books and following the tutorials inside would be a good place to start also. They’ll teach you the basics. You’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll be able to figure out complex tasks on your own once you understand the basics.

Just to add to what Simon suggested, if you try following the tutorials, and have problems, there are quite a few knowledgeable people here at “The Cow”, that would be only too willing to help you through it. For the most part, the podcast tutes should be easy to follow, but it’s nice to know you have the help and support of the members, for any difficulties.
Jason’s suggestion is also a great one. “Classroom” is a great book, as are any of the books by Chris and Trish Meyer.
