  • New Mac Pro: 64GB RAM or D700?

Posted by Brett Sherman on March 11, 2014 at 5:43 pm

I’m spec’ing the Mac Pro to purchase. I have to come in under $6500. So I have to either get a 6-core 32GB D700 machine or a 6-core 64GB D500 machine. Which do you believe is better?

My hunch now is that the 64GB will improve performance over the D700 upgrade. But, I know RAM is easier to upgrade, however I’m not sure if I ever will. Not to mention there could be a greater advantage in upgrading to a yet unknown future graphics card down the road – whereas RAM will always be the same on this machine. Any advice from those working with MacPros?

What are you going to run on the machine? You can always upgrade RAM later. Rock with 32GB now for example. For most purposes, 32 GB on the 6-core will be sufficent.

I wouldn’t bank on there ever being aftermarket GPUs for the new Mac Pro. The safest bet is to spec the D700 and upgrade the RAM later since you know for certain that is an option.

I have the 6 core with 32GBS of ram and the D 700’s, [aid just under 5K and for video editing with a laCie big 2 raid setup, I don’t see how anything could be faster. GO with the 700’s and 32 GB.

I’ve also bought the 6 core with D700 and 32GB and I’ve seen quite a few people do the same thing.

Now about that internal flash storage… get as much as your budget will allow.

Implemented a D500/6-Core/32GB first (D700/12-Core/64GB waiting) and can honestly say…DAMN THESE ARE FAST!!!!

My tests are R3Ds with or without ROCKET.

The internal 500GB drive was avg. 900 MBs so getting half debayer in real time and decent at Full in REDCine.

Other tests are Magma ExpressBox 3T w/ROCKET and Sonnet Tempo SSD PCI card.

I cant wait to test the full blown spec system 🙂

I too suggest getting the D700 even though I havent tested it yet.

On my MacBook Pro Retina (2013 spec’d out fully) I can get nearly real time with full debayer @ 4K (11 minute transcode time to ProRes HQ for 7 minute clip) in RedCine-X…so it doesn’t sound that much better.
