  • Text function doesn’t work

Posted by John Hartley on July 11, 2008 at 5:36 am

Hey guys, I’m new to AE and have run into a snag. I can’t seem to get my Text function to work. I click on the Text button and then click inside my composition, but when I try to type nothing happens. It says in the layer that I have typed something, but nothing comes up on the composition. Hopefully someone has a clue about what’s going on with me, because I have no clue. Thanks.

    John –

Are you creating a solid first, then applying the text effect (effects>text>basic text) to the solid layer?

what color is the text and what color is the background of your comp? they may both be black.

click the transparency grid icon at the bottom of the preview window to switch the background color to transparent (assuming you don’t have a solid under the text layer).

or, just change the color of the text by selecting the text layer then clicking the fill color in the character palette and selecting a different color.

I tried out the suggestions so far and it was fine for a little bit, but then i went to change the color and it disappeared again. It doesn’t completely disappear though, it turns into one dot that is extremely small and I can’t make it any bigger. Using the suggestions I’ve received so far, I have been able to use the text function, just not to full capacity. Thank you for the response it was helpful. If you have any idea what the conversion from the text to that little dot is, that would be helpful to know also. Thanks again.

aside from a bad font, the only thing i can think of that, would be the text size is very small or some other attribute is screwy… form character palette, click the little menu arrow/triangle in the upper-right corner of the palette, the choose reset character. this should give default values for the character settings. you might do the same for the paragraph palette. then try typing a new text layer.
