New Mac Pro Modular – some really cool guesswork!
Posted by Joseph W. bourke on February 7, 2013 at 8:28 pmRealize up front that this is dreaming in 3D, but it is some very nice dreaming:

February 7, 2013 at 8:48 pmYeah…DREAMING. Apple never does expandability like that. They want as little customization as possible. I mean…they only offer THREE PCIe slots. They used to do 6.

Apple seem to be all about scale now – they want the PC to become a little homogeneous sliver of elegant light that the consumer turns to for everything. They’re aiming at collecting 10 billion credit card details and anything else will be lost in the noise of thousands of palms itching..

February 8, 2013 at 1:10 pmAnd if they were going to go this far in creating a modular approach – they “should” also consider that the main module be rack mountable for machine rooms and mobile on-set production. So Cable connections cannot be on what will become the side of the machine once mounted.
But it is a dream, so dream away!

February 8, 2013 at 3:16 pmIt struck me that it’s a brilliant idea, but never anything that Apple, in its’ infinite wisdom (and design ethic) would even consider. Modularity…configurability…that’s for those schlumpfs at Microsoft! (don’t worry, I’m one of those schlumpfs who works on the PC platform)

February 8, 2013 at 5:31 pmHello,
this is a nice concept. But I would expect something more cloud-like.
I imagine:
– a well designed device that fits well onto a desktop as under it,
and also well into a 19” server-rack (e.g. by coupling two of them?)– 1-2 PCI-E slots / BTO-option for Nvidia Tesla
– 2 Thunderbolt and 2 Gb Ethernet ports
– in a server-rack, several units are interconnected via Thunderbolt;
making Thunderbolt the backend– Promise-RAIDs as other HW-vendors supporting Apple’s proprietary Thunderbolt-backend-protocol
– on/under the desktop, the local unit is connected via Gb Ethernet;
being the frontend– standard-interface is the iPad 🙂
– display device is the 4K iTV :-))
– making us edit with PROCUTX on the iPad while GUI/Monitoring in 4K on the iTV :-)))
– doing hardcore-processing on our private cloud :-))))
Best regards,

February 8, 2013 at 7:09 pm…forgot something…
the cloud unit should look like the logo from iFFmpeg
https://osx.wdfiles.com/local–files/icon:iffmpeg/iFFmpeg.pngand be branded Apple Satellite
😉

February 11, 2013 at 10:42 pmIt’s been reported on another forum that Jim Dalrymple was on Tech Night Owl and was asked “New MacPro by Spring?”
Jim replied, “Yeah, I would imagine so.”
