I am a pretty high end user of Sony Vegas and receive the Creative Cow rss update and I have seen so many things in AE that I want to be able to do so I bought it. Now I am looking at my shiny new software, staring at a blank screen and I don’t know what to do. Can somebody kindly recommend me a good starting point via tutorial video or website to go to. Thanks!!

Right here on Creative Cow are very good podcasts for After Effects!

But the best AE Site is http://www.videocopilot.net This is Andrew Kramers Website on wich he has a lot tutorials.

In case you´re new to AE like you check out his After Effects Basic Tutorials also on his Site.

Wow…thank you so much for the insight. It sounds like AE might be better to use for specific effects within a different project in Premiere or Vegas. Would that be accurate?

For smaller projects, and if you have a good enough computer, well a lot of RAM actually, feel free to use the space bar (its a good habit to get into throughout compositing) and yeah i can usually get it to playback in realtime. What i would say is always SAVE your work. I use incremental project saves so i can revert to a given time if necessary.

    more important, have fun.

Oh and for an incremental chronological learning curve to software i prefer to run throught the http://www.lynda.com tutorials as they follow a path which gradually introduces you to the software and how and why it does what it does. Rather than just having random tutorials.

    cheers

I guess that makes sense. For example…right now I am editing a 30 second commercial that airs on TV during Astros and Rockets games in Houston. I have done the whole spot in Sony Vegas and am pretty happy with it all in all. But I feel like I could do some cool stuff with it in AE. Or maybe not with it specifically but I dunno…I felt like I needed another tool in the bag, ya know? By the way I would love to see some of the stuff you guys have done…
