    hey,
i was wondering, when the woman in the red dress is shot in the opening scene of the movie sin city and both characters are sillouettes against a black background, if there is a way to acheive something simillar with after effects?
    thanks!

Shoot in front of a greenscreen? Key out the background, turn the foreground white with levels or something?

Unless I’m missing something; I haven’t seen Sin City, yet.

    Effects>Stylize>Leave Color

    is the quick easy way.

or for better control, dup the layer, key the color you want to keep. use this as an inverted alpha trackmatte on yet another dup so for example only the dress is left over. This will be laid over the original footage which you pull all the color out of. So in the end you have a red dress laid over a B&W image.

That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread; that’s what most of the movie’s like. But from his description, he’s talking about sillhouettes, which is more like greenscreening.

Ah yes, I see what you mean, I half read the content thinking it was the 100th time it was asked how to leave a color “like in Sin City or Schindler’s List” 🙂

my bad. I haven’t seen Sin City yet. Yes I know, shame on me.
