Andrew Kramer AE Basic Training Promo
Posted by Graham54 on November 10, 2007 at 9:23 amI’ve been trying to work out how Andrew Kramer achieved the effect of the slow moving polygons in the background of his Videocopilot AE Basic Training Promo. They appear to sit in 3D space. Are they some sort of lense flare effect?
Thanks

November 13, 2007 at 12:14 amYou could ask Andrew directly, or look at the trailer a little closer. Look at the polygons during the camera move. When the camera turns you can see the edges of the polygons. This means that they are shapes drawn with the shape tool in CS3 either in a precomp of their own or in the same comp as the text with very little opacity. If you do not have CS3 yet you can import an AI, PSD or PNG file with the same shape or one of your choosing. Just make sure the background is transparent and the layers 3D switch is on, then duplicate and animate the shapes as you like.
Hope this helps

November 13, 2007 at 6:58 amThank you, I really appreciate the response. I’ve had a play with the shape tool and have tried using Trapcode Particular but it just doesn’t look the same. Being new to this site how would I ask Andrew direct?
Thanks once again

November 14, 2007 at 9:53 pmHe used CC Particle World. If you watch the Titling 1 & 2 videos, he shows you the settings he uses.

November 15, 2007 at 10:56 amHi JJ, thanks for the info. I’ve seen Titles 1 & 2 where Andrew uses CC Particle World for creating the moving dots or stars but it’s the pentagons (5 sided polygons)that move slowley in the background I’m trying to create. I think you are correct in saying he used a particle system but I don’t think it was CC PW as it doesn’t let you create the pentagons. I believe it may be the Trapcode plug-in, Particular.
Cheers

November 15, 2007 at 6:01 pmOh, my mistake. My guess would be that he is using Particular with a custom particle animation created in a 3d program. They aren’t TRUE 3D anymore, but the eye is fooled. Watch his Medical Zoom tut. He shows how he does it in that one.
