Text and layer panel
I’m trying to open the layer panel for a text layer but no can do. I gather it’s not possible ?
I’m using text to make a mask , pen tool to make paths around the letters. In comp panel, once the first path is drawn around first letter I can no longer see other letters. I’ve toggled the layers / paths in the comp panel but that gets me nothing .Am I missing something obvious here ?

Thank you for the reply and apologies for the wrong terminology.Funny, I was trying blend modes for the layer, but hadn’t looked in the mask portion of the time line. Now that I found it , yep it works.
I’m not trying to accomplish much but learn After Effects :). Been mostly working with the Meyer’s book. I was going back and reviewing some material and got caught on this issue. However, I’m always open to hearing about a better way. I imagine there must be someway to create an alpha mask in the text layer, just can’t think of how to do it in AE.

Regarding the arcane lingo: In After Effects 7 and CS3, the terminology changed with the introduction of the new user interface. The Composition window was replaced by the Composition panel, the Layer window by the Layer panel, et cetera.
For more information about the terminology for user interface items in After Effects (and other Adobe applications), see the “About workspaces” section of After Effects Help.
Regarding opening text layers in their own layer panels: As Dave says, you can’t open text layers (or shape layers, or other layer types not based on footage items in the Project panel) in their own Layer panels.
