  • Problem Adding text layers to a composition

Posted by Jerry Black on July 22, 2007 at 8:59 pm

I have a composition which contains about 30 jpeg pictures. Each picture is sequenced as defined in the compostion with each picture timed per the settings of the compostion. None of the pictures conatain a text layer which I am attempting to add in AE C3 but each time I select the picture which selects it’s postion on the time line to add a text layer for that picture, the layer is added at the beginning of the compositon before the first picture. I want the text layer to be associated and postioned with the picture to which it is associated not at the beginning of the compostion.

I thought AE would naturally associate each layer relative to the time line for each picture to which it is related. I tried this on another composition that was NOT sequenced and got the same confusing results. Is the issue because I am working with a compostion and not a group of individual slides? I wanted to take advantange of the sequencing and over lap effects offered by the composition settings.

I am certain this is a basic task easily accomplished in AE but I am really stuck.

The end result is a basicall an enhanced slide show having the text for each slide keyed to opacity and possibly position all of which has to occur with the time duration for each slide.

    Please provide input.

    Much thanks

    if I understand correctly:
AE generally treats each layer individually, so a text layer is not automatically connected to a picture layer … each layer can function independently .

so you need to line up the text manually … you can do this by positioning the timeline marker to where you want it and hitting the [ key …

maybe it would be easier if you precomposed each slide/jpeg and then inserted the text layer within the precomp …

if you dont really understand precomping and layer structure maybe do a few of the tutorials here at the cow … then I’m sure it’ll all make sense … good luck!
