Where Does Final Cut X Store The Optimized Media?
When I import a folder of video clips from my Canon DSLR I select to copy the media to the final cut event folder…
When i do this, in the finder FCPX makes a folder called “Original Media” which has the original clips in it…but it doesn’t seem to have a folder containing ProRes files…? Am I doing something wrong? I thought it would transcode them all since i chose to make them “Optimized”?
Maybe the proves versions ar stored in a different location? I’m not trying to mess with anything, I’m just trying to get a deeper understanding how it all works.

In the “Transcoded Media” folder next to the Event.

Sorry if this in the wrong section, just realized…
Anyway, all i get in my finder events folder for a particular event is an “Analysis Files”, “Original Media” and “Render Files” folders….then there is a “Current Version.fcpevent”.
There doesn’t appear to be ProRes versions inside these folders anywhere…
Am i missing something here?

Hmm…i just tried importing another bunch of files from another project and now its making a folder of transcoded media….this is really strange since i know i specifically selected make optimized media for the other projects…
I guess ill try to reimport them….?

You didn’t check “create optimized media” when importing.
You can select all clips, right click, and choose Transcode Media. Choose Optimized.

Check and see if the media is already Pro Res. X will remove the option if it sees that it’s optimized. Another way to check is to right click a clip in the Event Browser and select Transcode from the pull down. If Optimize is grayed out then it’s seeing it as Pro Res.
Had this happen once when importing folders and didn’t realize one was already transcoded from fcp 7.

No reason to. As I mentioned in the original post, you can right click on the files in the browser and choose transcode media. Then choose optimized.

X decides if it needs to make a ProRes file at all. Maybe your imported media was already good enough. E.g. Xdcam files do not get transcoded to prores.
