Forgive the philosophical digression but reading this entertaining and thought provoking forum on a near daily basis brings out the poet in some, so why not the philosopher in others? Jump in as it suits.

There’s a strong streamlet of hopefulness running through the alleyways and byways here and it evokes a lot of debate on the future of FCX but rarely on the nature of hope itself.

Hope is often equated with optimism, and that may be a mistake. This brings to mind Lindsay Anderson’s great film “O Lucky Man” and it’s hero’s journey from innocence to reality…and in particular Alan Price’s wonderful Zen lyrics in the theme song:

Hope Springs eternal in a Young Man’s breast,
And he dreams of a better world ahead,
Without that dream you are Nothing, Nothing, Nothing,
You Gotta find out for yourself that dream is Dead,
La la la la, Dead, La la la la, Dead….

Lest the charge be levelled that this is all too black and dismal, check out the movie, in particular the hero’s confrontation with Lindsay Anderson himself at the end, and consider that perhaps the difference between hope and optimism is that optimism is a conscious choice…after all hope fades.

If this is the best of all possible worlds my optimism just got diminished. Oh f***! 🙂

As Harry Nilsson said in his wonderfully foolish song, “The Most Beautiful World in the World”:

The most beautiful world in the world,
and though there are times when I doubt you,
    I just couldn’t stay here without you…

False hope can be a bliss, but watch out for the consequences – unknown

Most Zen bumper sticker I ever saw:

I feel so much better since I gave up hope.

I asked a friend returning from an Alaskan hunting trip how it went. She said “Well, nobody shot me. I counted that as a good thing.”

Similar feeling from a song lyric…

Out on the road today I saw a DeadHead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said “don’t look back, you can never look back…

But then the song writer will write a song that is (most of the time) all about looking back. Song lyrics do not a business strategy make.
