  De-Interlace Question – I think

  I’m taking a video clip and laying it onto a blank screen of a laptop – so it looks like the guy in the frame is watching a little QT video on his laptop. The quesiton is the video gets a little blocky and because the frame is now at an angle the straight edges are jagged. I’m playing with de-interlacing the clips and it seems to work but doesn’t look super. Is this the best way to do it or is there something else?

  I’m working in DV (720×480) at 29.97.

  for ae to deinterlace, you just need to set the interpret footage settings fro those clips correctly (or verify that they are interpretted correctly).

  select the clip of the guy at his computer in the project window (not the timeline). then choose file>interpret footage>main… check that the separate fields is set to lower (for dv ntsc), and if you are going to render progressively (not reinterlace) then choose preserve edges, if you are going to re-interlace it when you render then leave it unchecked.

  do the same for the footage that you are going to put into the laptop screen.

  if it is still jaggy, let us know how you are putting the video in the screen.

  I don’t see the Preserve Edges option. I’m using AE 5.5. Could be that’s somewhere else?

  preserve edges may only be in later versions… it shouldn’t make a significant difference.
