OK, Here’s a question for all you guys who probably own the latest and greatest editions of AE. I have Avid Liquid 7.1 Pro on a two year old P4 Sony VAIO, and a friend just gave me an old copy of AE5.5. I have never used AE at all but would like to learn the basics and possibly move on some time later to a later edition.

Here’s the question: Is there any point in learning the basics with 5.5 and then moving up to later additions in the future, or would it be a waste of time? Would I be shooting myself in the foot spending time learning?

    Thanks guys,

    PJ

Not at all. Go ahead and play. The engine is still the same, it just now has leather seats and a Nav system 🙂 Just learn the engine.. import some footage and do some transform keyframing and add some effects and you’ll be good to go…

I would upgrade before you get too far in though. Some of the more advanced/interesting features of AE have changed enough to make it mildly frustrating for someone coming from an earlier version…

That said 5.5 is absolutely fine for learning the ropes and finding out if it’s something you want to pursue farther (which would justify a look at CS3).
