Jagged Text In AE — Not Sure Why
Posted by Jordan Orberg on March 6, 2007 at 2:55 pmHello,
For some reason, whenever I enter text into AE either by using the Layer/New/Text or by simply using the text tool, my text always comes out jagged around the edges. I’m not sure why — I have the quality set to best, and I have the resolution set to full. Its jagged when I RAM preview and when I export the video.Does anyone have a solution? I would really appreciate it! 🙂

March 6, 2007 at 5:30 pmit is mostlikely that the ‘quality’ check box is set to draft… in your timeline, to the right of the layer source name, there should be a series of icons, the ‘layer switches’ (you may need to turn these on by clicking the little box and the bottom-left corner of the timeline). the diagonal line icon is the quality setting, it should look like a smooth line. if it doesn’t, click it.
if that doesn’t work, make sure that opengl previews are not on (set it to adaptive resolution). you can do this the the previews pref pane, or by clicking the fast previews icon on the bottom-right of the preview window, and seeting it to adaptive resolution. if you video card is not opengl 2.0, antialias is not an option if you are using opengl to render previews or final render, so also make sure that your render settings are not set to use opengl acceleration.
that’s all i can think of, let us know if you continue to have problems.

March 6, 2007 at 6:55 pmI was aware of the little button that switches between best and draft, but I wasn’t aware of the OpenGL stuff. I went into preferences and changed it to Adaptive Resolution, but nothing happened. The text is still jagged. I have a Geforce 7800 GT – I’m not sure if that makes a difference. I set it to OpenGL again, to see if anything happened, and nothing did.
Is there another solution?
I’ve uploaded an example of my problem – but its kind of hard to see because I had to make the resolution small so you could download it easily. If you look at the top of the ‘O’ and pretty much the top and bottom of every letter, you can see where it gets jagged and seems to move around a little bit when it scales.

March 6, 2007 at 6:57 pmHere is a larger version as well — I know you might think that it is simply the compression I’m using when exporting, but it looks like this in my preview window as well when I RAM preview.

March 7, 2007 at 5:21 pmok, this looks like an interlace issue. try rendering without fields on.
although it’s strange that you’re seeing this effect in your ram preview too (ram previews usually do not render in fields, but this does look like an interlace issue).

March 7, 2007 at 5:33 pmWhat do you mean by rendering with fields on? How do I do this? 🙂
Thank you for your help! -

March 7, 2007 at 5:48 pmwhen you want to render your comp and select ‘make movie’ or ‘add to render queue’ and the render queue pops up. select the ‘render settings’ (probably set to ‘best sttings’). this brings up the render settings pane. about halfway down is a setting for ‘field render,’ select ‘off.’
