February 11, 2007 at 4:58 amJust go to any fabric store and buy the cheapest low-luster fabric that you can find. I made my green screen out of 2 – 15′ lenghts of 4′ wide material. I used the iron activated bonding material to bind the 2 pieces together. I paid $1 per yard. It cost about $15. I also made my own softboxes using something called fan-fold foam. It is something like foam core poster board. I used 4 – 5500K fluorescent light bulbs in each one. I use 2 of those to light the talent. I use several of those clamp on lights with 55ooK bulbs to light the screen. Everything cost about $60 including the screen, 2 softboxes with PVC stands and 4 clamps lights. I used a thin white plastic tablecloth for the softbox cover. The most expensive part was the 12 daylight fluorescent bulbs. The bulbs were the most expensive part. The fluorescents burn cool and do not use much electricity. You could get away with using just clamp lights and standard bulbs for a lot less than $60.
I also made a second screen with green material. Green will work better with a DV camera.
Pure cotton would be fine. Just make sure it does not have a shine to it.

This lighting setup sounds really interesting. Is it possible that you could post a picture of your soft boxes? How did you exactly mount the lights with the fan fold foam? And where did get these materials?
I’ve been trying to assemble some suitable lights at micro-budget prices, but I’m usually saddled with cumbersome work lights and even more cumbersome diffusion. I’m working with mostly inanimate objects so it’s not important for me to impress clients with my equipment…at this stage anyway…
