I run a small post operation for documentary television. We have *always* been an Avid house. As of just last week, we were discussing dropping some serious cash to become a FCP house.

We really love the prospect of using all the cores and all the memory in our machines instead of just one and some. We like the ease of editing MOVs natively, instead of converting to MXFs. We’re even open to a new way of editing, media management, and thinking about the timeline.

After yesterday’s release, however, that just won’t be possible for us.

-We use a TON of archival tape-based footage – no straightforward way to get it into FCPX
-Inability to export OMF/AAF to work with outside folks to do colorizing, mixing
-No way to get broadcast-accurate previewing while editing

This last one, its inability to work with any kind of ‘breakout’ interface, sealed the deal for us. Maybe if these things improve, we’ll reconsider. For now, we’ll be spending more money on Avid systems.
