Do I even want events?
I have always organized my media by project. I’m not sure I’m into the idea of having events. What do you think? Can I choose which events I can see?

You can create a default event for each project and hide the events list away. Then it’s almost exactly like FCP7.

The weirdest thing about the Event system to me is how you are only allowed to save to a root folder on the drive under the “Final Cut Events” folder, and every Event in that folder is loaded on startup. So without manually archiving/moving the Events in that folder, do they want EVERY Event ever created on the drive to load EVERY time FCP X is launched? Such a mess.
The only way to get anything close to the “Bin” structure is to use the keyword / smart folder system. I really don’t see the point of abandoning the Bin/Sequence system. I am totally into the clip tagging but these “Events” seem totally dumb.

It’s almost certainly just loading a database, though, not examining all of the media files, so I don’t think there’s any particular reason to worry about performance here.

Organizing by project has been my approach since Avid first came out. It also is a good way to archive projects that may need work in the future.

I haven’t had much of a chance to play with it yet, but my guess is that they essentially want to do away with the need to go into the Finder to load your project. “Events” are basically project files now, except they’re accessed within FCP itself. The one thing I can’t figure out is why you can’t go deeper than the root level on any drive to save events in.

Playing with the files in Finder seems like a big no-no.

It’s more unnecessary clutter than performance concerns. 3-4 projects going at a time and you have to load all of the events/media to work on one? what happens when the folder on the RAID is 100 events deep?
i didn’t notice a hide mechanic for events, just clips. maybe that is the only solution for now.
