  swell up and pop

  I am looking to make a tomato swell up and pop (or explode) into a flat layer of red as if it has blown up on the camer lens. Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to do this without plug-ins?

  Sounds like you need to animate a bulge effect and use animated masks on a tomate red solid to create the “splats” coming toward the camera.
