Headhone gain for 5D III?
Is there a control for getting more volume to the headphone output. (And WOW, is the manual that comes with this camera inadequate. I mean seriously incomplete and obtuse.)

DSLR’s = use second source audio. The in-camera audio on DSLR’s should really only be used as scratch audio, in my opinion.
Your question about adjusting headphone volume is answered in the Canon manual, page 235.

I fully agree and certainly would never use the camera’s mic for anything but reference. The add-on mini shotguns are only minimally better and certainly not acceptable for professional work.
What I have been experimenting with are external XLR mixers which feed the camera’s mic input. Conclusions so far is that the JuicedLink “ultra portable mixer” (at least the one I was using) introduces waaaay to high of a noise floor to be ever considered for serious work. On the other hand the Sound Devices Pre-Mix D outputting at line level, and with the camera’s input level cranked down to one step above off, sounds fantastic. Problem is whether or not it sounds $900 fantastic so I’ll probably keep looking.
We primarily bought the 5D mk III to do static interviews on location, so I really want to stick with a single system approach if at all possible.

As Ryan said, It’s a double system camera. Think of it as a ‘Film’ camera. You have to record and control sound through a separate device.

The TASCAM DR60D is also a great way to capture sound for the mk iii.
Even though it’s a mixer and recorder, it’s line output works much the way the Sound Devices Mix Pre D does and it’s a lot less expensive. ($349) More here.

Nick and I didn’t have time to get into that, but I did the work previously with local DP Rick Diamond and found the DR60D and mk iii made acceptable 16 bit files on the camera. No double record required. The DR60 D is a bit of a battery hog. You could choose to use the DR60 D to double record or to feed the mk iii.

So I googled “headphone gain on Mark iii” and came to this post where someone actually took the time to look it up in the manual. . . just to tell everyone in a public forum the page number to go look themselves. There’s some lost time I will never get back.

I had to reply here because the Internet needs more info than checking a page in the manual. Fortunately for me, I have the manual so that was actually very helpful. Here’s what to do:
To turn the volume up or down in video mode:

hit the Q button
hold the RATE button and press up or down on the multi directional controller.This turns the volume up or down — there is no visual display of headphone level, you can hear the difference though as you do it.
